Membership Benefits and Activities

Membership in the SSWG connects you with a diverse community of fibre artists

In the guild we do not just focus on spinning and weaving, members also have expertise in dyeing, felting, knitting, crocheting, sewing etc. If an artistic activity includes fibre in some way, there is likely someone who knows about it.

Equipment and Library Benefits

Our physical studio has a selection of equipment for members to use, either in-studio, or to take home by arrangement. Examples of equipment include: table and floor looms, various spinning wheels, a drum carder, a blending board, a rag-cutter, and more.

The Guild maintains an extensive library of older rare and out of print fibre arts resources as well as a collection of the newest publications. We also maintain subscriptions to several fibre arts magazines and periodicals including back issues.

Education

The Guild sponsors and organizes workshops and classes related to Fibre Arts. These workshops and classes take the form of either informal groups learning a technique together (Study Groups) or more formal instruction via workshops or courses. On occasion the Guild will sponsor internationally recognized instructors to present workshops in their fields of expertise.
The Guild is also expanding its presence in the community by working with various groups to provide demonstrations and instruction in various Fibre Arts.

Shows and Sales

Shows of members’ work held in galleries around Saskatoon and Saskatchewan provide opportunities for the public to view a variety of fibre arts. The Guild also holds sales throughout the year. Keep an eye on our Website, Facebook and Instagram for upcoming events.

Study Groups

Study groups are shared interest focused get-togethers by members. These groups range from informal social time where member work on their own projects while visiting, informal problem solving sessions, a lecture or learning series, or set up a group project.

Timing and frequency of study group meetings are set by mutual consent, and one member volunteers to email out information, meeting reminders etc. to any interested SSWG members.

Our longest-running study groups are the Every other Tuesday afternoon Spinning Study Group, and the Monthly Saturday afternoon Weavers Study Group. Examples of other groups that run on a less frequent or irregular basis are: Felters, Dyers, Tapestry weavers, Knitters, Sock Machine Knitters etc.

Weaving Study Group

Summer 2025 – The weaving study group started a series of talks by members looking at methods of clothing creation from their hand-woven fabric. The focus being on minimal fabric cutting and/or zero waste styles.

Spinning Study Group

The spinner’s group meets informally for social time, and mentorship. Depending on interest a meeting can be devoted to a joint activity or learning session. For example, a spinning wheel spa day is being planned for Fall 2025.

Dyeing Day

Summer 2024 – an informal dyeing day was organized by a member at her home. Their locally grown Japanese indigo was used by the group to dye samples of hand-spun yarn and handwoven fabric.
